(a) Nominal resistance detection
Measurement, select the appropriate range of the multimeter resistance file, the two pens are connected between the potentiometer two fixed pin solder, first measure the total resistance of the potentiometer is the same as the nominal resistance value. If the measured resistance is infinity or larger than the nominal resistance, the potentiometer is open or damaged.
Then the two table hair respectively connected to the potentiometer center head and either end of the two fixed ends, slowly rotate the potentiometer handle, so that it rotates from one extreme position to the other extreme position, the normal potentiometer, the resistance value indicated by the multimeter needle should be from the nominal resistance (or 0ω) continuous change to 0ω (or nominal resistance). The entire rotation process, the meter needle should change smoothly, without any jumping phenomenon. If the needle jumps during the process of adjusting the resistance value, the potentiometer has a poor contact fault. Straight slide potentiometer detection method is the same.
(B) with a switch potentiometer detection
For the potentiometer with switch, in addition to the above method should be tested potentiometer nominal resistance and contact, but also to test the switch is normal.
First rotate the potentiometer shaft handle, check whether the switch is flexible, on, off whether there is a crisp "click" sound. Use a multimeter r × 1 ω file, two meter pointer in the potentiometer switch on the two external solder, rotate the potentiometer shaft handle, so that the switch on, the resistance value indicated on the multimeter from infinity (∞) to 0 ω. Then turn off the switch, the multimeter pointer should be returned from 0 ω "∞" at. Measurement should be repeatedly on, off the potentiometer switch, observe the response of each action of the switch. If the switch in the "on" position resistance is not 0ω, in the "off" position resistance is not infinity, then the potentiometer switch has been damaged.

Use the appropriate range of the resistance class of the multimeter to measure the resistance value of the two groups of potentiometers (i.e., the resistance value between a, c and a', c' resistance value) are the same and whether the nominal resistance value is consistent.
